Temporomandibular joint dysfunction may be a new term to you. However, you've probably heard about "TMJ." This acronym refers to the joints that connect the mandible (jaw) to the skull. The joints are located just in front of the ears, on either side of the head. When the TMJs become misaligned, which can occur as a result of stress, injury, habits, or other situations, nagging to debilitating pain may occur. Common symptoms include but are not limited to:
Dr. Holiman can assess your jaw position and determine if TMJ dysfunction causes the symptoms you are incurring. A simple custom-made oral appliance may alleviate your pain and problems. In some cases, stress reduction and exercises, including altering habits (like gum chewing) can also help relieve TMJ pain. When teeth are worn down, they may require crowns or bonding to restore a proper bite, which can hold the TMJs in correct position. Some patients also require braces or Invisalign to reposition their bite.
If you experience any of the above symptoms, please inform Dr. Holiman at your next dental visit or call to schedule a TMJ analysis.
